The American Center for Disease Control announced that as per their tally, the number of coronavirus infections in the U.S. could be just 10 times more than what is reported. This comes as America experiences a ‘disturbing surge’ of COVID-19 cases in some states.

According to reports, the assessment comes after examining the blood samples nationwide to find the presence of antibodies. “Our best estimate right now is that for every case that’s reported, there actually are 10 other infections,” Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the CDC said on Thursday.

The presence of antibodies (a certain protein in the blood) determines whether a person’s immune system has already confronted the novel coronavirus or not. On this note, as per CDC, for every COVID-19 positive, there are 10 more people had antibodies, meaning they’ve asymptomatically fought the virus, NBC News reports.

It must be noted, to draw the estimate, CDC samples blood from different sources like donated in the blood banks, and other lab testing for blood. This re-draws the current 2.3 million infections to 23 million infections nationwide.

“The traditional approach of looking for symptomatic illness and diagnosing it obviously underestimates the total amount of infections,” Redfield told saying the novel coronavirus causes significant numbers of asymptomatic infections.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious disease specialist said: “The next couple of weeks are going to be critical to address those surges that we’re seeing in Texas, Florida, Arizona, and other states.”

Dr. Redfield has urged Americans to continue to remain vigilant in stopping the spread of the virus. Currently Southeast and Western U.S. are amid a ‘disturbing surge’ in infections.

The virus spreads from person to person during close contact when respiratory droplets from the infected are transmitted to a healthy person while sneezing, coughing, talking, and other means. The best way to prevent the spread of the virus is social distancing, by keeping at least 6 feet distance among strangers while interacting.
