Coronavirus death toll in the world’s most powerful nation just topped the 5 million milestones on Sunday, in by far the world’s largest outbreak.
As per Johns Hopkins’ real-time tally, coronavirus cases in the US registered a total of 5,044,864 cases, along with 162,938 deaths.
At least 539 deaths and nearly 50k infections were reported in the last 24-hours, New York Times COVID tally showed. This is in contrast to the average 50k case per day over last week.
While the 5 million marks are by far bigger than any countries stuck by the Pandemic, many health experts believe the number of cases could be just 10X of what is reported.
Which means the US could have 50 million cases, thanks to the 40% infected who did not show any symptoms and testing limitations, the Associated Press (AP) reports.
Polls showed a majority of Americans are dissatisfied with the Trump Administration’s handling of the pandemic. The President is set to compete on the national poll due this November.
In one such poll by FiveThirtyEight, graphs showed a majority 58.1% disapprove of Trump’s handling of the pandmeic, compared to the 37.9% of them who approve.
“The United States just passed 5 million reported infections,” Democrat opposition Joe Bidden tweeted on Sunday.
America’s unstoppable spurt of the coronavirus caseload is being met with incredulity by the European nations. Italy was the hotbed of the virus in Europe and still have one of the world’s biggest death toll.
However, strict containment and vigilant efforts by the Italian government successfully contained the spread.
“We Italians always saw America as a model. But with this virus we’ve discovered a country that is very fragile, with bad infrastructure and a public health system that is nonexistent,” Massimo Franco, a columnist with daily Corriere della Sera said.
‘It is what it is’
A flashback into the last few months, when the pandmeic was still budding, clearly shows the negligence of the US federal government.
From politicised resistance on facemasks to suggesting injecting disinfectants in COVID patients (which Trump later said he was joking), there have been some wild instances of immature handling.
Furthermore, the US president has also been a frequent critic of Dr Anthony Fauci, who has time and again slammed him; but Fauci is a respected figure in Europe, and seeing the constant criticism Italy’s leading COVID hospital even offered him a job if Trump fired him, AP reports.
In a recent interview with Jonathan Swan, of Axios, when asked what makes him say COVID-19 situation in the US is “under control” when 1k Americans are dying each day, Trump said:
“They are dying, that’s true. And you have — it is what it is. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t doing everything we can. It’s under control as much as you can control it. This is a horrible plague that beset us.”
