Ford set to unveil F-150 all-electric pickup

-

Dearborn, United States: Ford will unveil the all-electric version of its best-selling F-150 pickup on Wednesday, just one day after receiving President Joe Biden’s warm endorsement.

The battery-powered Ford F-150 “Lightning” is part of a $22 billion plan by the US automaker to expand its electric vehicle lineup by 2025.

“This sucker’s quick,” Biden said Tuesday afternoon following a spin in the pickup in Dearborn, Michigan.

The Mustang Mach-E sport utility vehicle is Ford’s first all-electric vehicle, but the Lightning will be the first battery-powered version of the F-150.

The Ford F-150, which was first introduced in 1948, has long been the best-selling vehicle in the United States and a crucial model for the 118-year-old corporation.

Ford has remained tight-lipped on the vehicle ahead of its official debut at 9:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday (01:30 GMT).

However, Biden disclosed on Tuesday that the Lightning can accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in around 4.4 seconds.

The president of the United States paid a visit to Ford’s Michigan plant to drum up support for a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that includes $174 billion for electric vehicle research.

The electric vehicle, according to Biden, is an important part of the campaign to “rescue the earth” from global warming.

At Ford’s annual meeting earlier this month, CEO Jim Farley praised the vehicle, telling shareholders that the firm is “electrifying some of the most iconic nameplates at Ford” as part of its growth strategy.

“We will not cede ground in the EVs to others in vehicle segments where millions of customers rely on us and Ford as the established leader,” Farly said. “This is our home turf.”

Ford has stated that the next F-150 electrified variant will be built in Dearborn by mid-2022.
