Mirabai Chanu fetches India Olympic silver in weightlifting

Kolkata, India: Mirabai Chanu won India’s first Olympic medal, a silver medal in 49kg weightlifting with a total lift of 202 kg, at the Tokyo Olympics.

Zhihu Hou of China won gold.

Chanu lifted 84 and 87 kg successfully but fell short of lifting 89 kilograms as she finished second after snatch, while China’s Zhihu hoisted 94 kilograms to set an Olympic record.

Mirabai Chanu set a new Olympic record in the clean and jerk with a lift of 115 kilograms as per the latest updates.

India’s Saurabh Chaudhary finished eighth in the men’s 10m Air Pistol final.

After six series of ten shots, Elavenil Valarivan came in 16th (626.5) and Apurvi Chandela came in 36th (621.9), failing to qualify in the 10m air rifle women’s qualification round (only top 8 qualified).

In table tennis, India’s Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost in straight games against Chinese Taipei’s Yun Ju Lin and Ching I Cheng in the Round of 16 of the mixed doubles event, 11-8 11-6 11-5 11-4.

Sumit Nagal won his first-round singles match 6-4 6-7 6-4 against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who won gold at the 2018 Asian Games.

In the deciding set, Indian badminton men’s doubles combination Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty gave Chinese Taipei’s Yang Lee and Chi-Lin Wang a run for their money, winning 27-25 to win the game.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles Group Stage, badminton player Sai Praneeth was defeated by Israel’s Misha Zilberman (Group D).

In men’s hockey, India defeated New Zealand 3-2 in Pool A, thanks to goals from Rupinder Pal Singh and Harmanpreet Singh, who helped the team recover from a shaky start.

On Day 2, the Indian women’s hockey squad will also begin their campaign. Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav of India lost 6-2 against An San and Kim Je Deok of South Korea in the quarterfinals of archery.
