The head of the Catholic Church, for the first time, showed support for same-sex marriage in an interview featured on a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky.

In an apparent departure from the traditional Vatican verdict on same-sex unions, Pope Francis said in favor of recognizing the different relationships between two people, apart from the opposite gender.

“They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it.”

The world’s most powerful religious leader said in the documentary that premeired Wednesday.

He said, homosexual people are children of God and have the right to be in a family. “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” he said.

The head of the Vatican state said he has although opposed same-sex marriages in law, nonetheless he supported some legal protection for them.

The documentary – Francesco – that shows the life and work of the Pope was released as part of the Rome Film Festival, the BBC reported.

Pope’s recent statements on the same-sex matter comes as a progress from his earlier comments on the same case. He has traditionally opposed relationship between two people of the same gender.

He said ‘I stood for that’ referring to the time when he was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

In his book On Heaven and Earth, 2013, the Pope said giving same-sex marriage legal equation with heterosexual marriage would mean an ‘anthropological regression.’

The New York Times noted, the pope has adopted a more adapting tone towards same-sex relationship since his pontification to the Roman Catholic Church.

“Pope Francis’s support for same-sex civil unions is a major step forward in the church’s support of LGBTQ people,” Rev. James Martin said the pope’s comments on Twitter.

“It is in keeping with his pastoral approach to LGBT people, including LGBT Catholics, and sends a strong signal to countries where the church has opposed such laws.”
