A petition is calling to legislate “George’s Law” to protect the racial injustices on people of color. It has so far garnered 141,375 signatures and counting, which seeks to make any sorts of racial crimes an ‘act of terror,’ in America.
Authored by Portland activist Michael Anthony, the petition is scheduled to be delivered to the Governor’s Nationwide, and “the law would make racially motivated crime an act of terror and declare racist hate groups terrorist organizations,” according to the petitioner.
The petition posted on Change.org is titled “Make acts of racism an act of domestic terrorism- Create George’s law” which seeks to criminalize racially-charged crimes like the one that killed Floyd. The petition argues “racism is at the forefront of more violence in this country than any other act,” but “there are no strict federal and national laws in place to combat acts of racism.”
“I propose that we make racially motivated crime an act of terror and racist/hate groups terrorist organizations. I propose that we create George’s Law to combat domestic racist terrorism,” Anthony says.
“We are very seriously looking at that issue”
On June 1, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison — a civil rights law practitioner — took charge of George Floyd’s petition. Minnesota’s Gov. Tim Walz announced after consulting with Floyd’s family.
“We’re going over it carefully and we are reviewing the videotapes, the audiotapes, all the evidence, and we will make a charging decision based on the facts that we can prove, but I don’t want anybody to doubt that we are very seriously looking at that issue,” Ellison told in an interview, The Hill reports.
George Floyd was arrested on charges of forgery and was later suffocated to death after a white Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin pinned Floyd’s neck for long enough until he let out ‘I can’t breathe’ before dying. Floyd’s last words have become the clarion call for global protests and have invoked protest against racial prejudices from the past.
