Backlash after Pak PM Imran Khan calls Bin Laden a 'Martyr' - We The World Magazine

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday called the Al Qaeda Chief and 9/11 mastermind a ‘Shaheed’ or Martyr, to the utter shock of the world.

A short video extracted from the recent National Assembly has gone viral. It shows Khan addressing Osama Bin Laden’s assassination by the US, which he says was ’embarrassing’ for their nation when the US forces broke in Abottabad without informing the nation and killed the Al Qaeda Chief.

“For Pakistanis across the globe, it was an embarrassing moment when the Americans came and killed Osama bin Laden at Abbottabad…martyred him. The whole world started abusing us after that. Our allies came inside our country and killed someone without informing us. And, 70,000 Pakistanis died because of the US’ war on terror,” he said in the recent National Assembly meeting.

In May 2011, US Navy Seals killed Osama Bin Laden in his hideout, who is responsible for one of humankind’s deadliest terror attacks, the 9/11 on World Trade Centers of the U.S. that killed at least 3k people.

‘Taliban Khan’

The footage went viral and the PM faced a backlash from the opposition party. PML-N senior leader Khawaja Asif lambasted the Khan for calling the killer terrorist a martyr. “Bin Laden brought terrorism to our lands, he was a terrorist through and through and he [premier] calls him shaheed?” Asif was quoted as saying by Pakistani media Dawn.

Member of the Pak Senate, Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar labeled Khan a ‘national security threat,’ and “Taliban Khan.’ “By labeling Osama bin Laden a martyr, Imran Khan has become a national security threat. If he is a martyr, then what are the status of those civilians and members of our armed forces who embraced martyrdom in the attacks by Al Qaeda?” Senator Khokhar was quoted by Dawn.

This is apparently not the first time Mr. Khan can be seen defending the assassination of Bin Laden. In one interview, the Pak PM said: “[…] in fact the way Osama Bin Laden was killed, he’d become a martyr to a certain sect, a certain number of people. So he is probably more an inspiration.”

Another interview footage has gone viral where Imran Khan can be seen averting the interviewer’s question when Khan was asked does he thinks Osama Bin Laden as a terrorist? Watch the footage below:
