In a frightening incident, a 21-years-old commerce student from Haryana was shot dead by her jilted lover in broad daylight, security camera footage shows, now viral on social media.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon in a town 30 km away from Delhi in Faridabad. The final-year commerce student, identified Nikita Tomar, was returning from the exam center with her friend when she was attacked.
The attackers, Touseef, and his friend Rehan were waiting outside the center for the girls to come and abduct Nikita, the CCTV footage shows. They try to shove Nikita inside the car.
The girls struggle to get out of the gun-armed man’s grip, and before she can get rid she is shot dead. Her friend is left behind with bleeding Nikita. The two men swiftly enter the car and flee.
Nikita was rushed to the hospital but could not be saved, media reports confirm.
Her family has alleged that she was a victim of ‘love jihad’ – a term used by radical Hindus to denote men who pursue converting women into Islam within the premise of love and marriage, Times Now reported.
“Its a case of love Jihad, where the accused Tauseef was forcing my niece for religious conversion and when she refused he killed her”, victim’s uncle told the media outlet.
A Times Now investigation also found that the family was under a lot of pressure and due to which the family withdrew a previous case they pressed against Touseef for abducting Nikita in 2018.
Faridabad police officer OP Singh told NDTV both Nikita and Touseef knew each other for a long, and the man kidnapped Nikita in 2018 as well.
The incident comes at a time when the Hindu and Muslim community is already ruffled by the recent Jihadist attack that beheaded a French history teacher for showing Prophet Mohammed’s cartoon. France vowed to not tolerate such activities which angered Muslims.
Just a few weeks before, India was enraged by an advertisement by one of the nation’s leading jewelry brands Tanishq for portraying Hindu-Muslim unity, which the country’s radical Hindus slammed for promoting ‘love jihad.’
Now the Nikita Tomar Faridabad incident, which has gone viral on social media, is inevitably drawing parallels with the wave of resistance slamming the Tanishq advert for trying to promote interfaith unity.
Hashtag love jihad was trending on top of Twitter trends in India with the proponent of the term pressing the cause to be true and real.
The two accused in the Nikita Tomar murder were arrested yesterday by Haryana police after a brief spat with police, media reports confirm.
“Both accused involved in the brutal murder of a girl student in Faridabad last evening arrested. The murder weapon has been recovered. An SIT led by ACP Crime Anil Kumar will ensure a quick probe & time-bound trial to ensure justice to the family,” Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij was quoted by ANI news agency.
