Shots fired near George Floyd memorial in Minneapolis

Minneapolis, United States: Multiple gunshots were fired near the Minneapolis location where George Floyd was killed on Tuesday, scattering people who had gathered to mark the one-year anniversary of his murder, according to police and witnesses.

A police spokesman said that shortly after the shooting, “an individual showed up at Abbott Northwestern Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.” The wound was non-life-threatening, the spokesman said.

People could be seen ducking behind automobiles and running for shelter as more than two dozen rounds sounded out in video footage obtained at the time the gunshots sounded out.

“Get down,” a man was heard shouting.

According to a police spokesman, officers responded to a complaint of shots fired and a vehicle fleeing the area “at a high rate of speed.”

The incident happened roughly a block away from the intersection that has become known as George Floyd memorial square in Minneapolis.

Bullet casings were found on the ground where the shooting occurred, as well as a damaged window in a barbershop, according to an AFP photographer.

Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020, spurred nationwide protests against racial inequality and police violence, and former police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder this month.

On Tuesday, members of Floyd’s family traveled to Washington to meet with President Joe Biden and urge Congress to enact the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Hundreds of people were killed and injured in a series of shootings around the United States over the weekend.

Homicides, which are usually caused by guns, increased by a record 30 percent last year compared to 2019, and are now anticipated to be 20-25 percent higher than a year ago.

Experts say there is no single cause for the increasing bloodshed in practically all large cities, and that it is unlikely to decrease drastically when the coronavirus pandemic fades.
