Ray of hope: 100-years-old Assamese woman defeats COVID-19

A 100-years-old COVID-19 patient from the North-east Indian state of Assam became the state’s oldest to defeat the novel coronavirus, Assam MLA Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet.

Mai Handique, Assam’s oldest COVID-19 patient was sent back to her old age home following a successful recovery from the deadly virus that has so far taken nearly 1 million lives around the world.

“Steely resolve of 100-year-old Mai Handique is monumental. With brilliant support of doctors at MMCH, she defeated #coronavirus, giving us a lesson in having the right will power,” Sarma wrote on Tweeter.

“As she gets back to Mother’s Old Age Home, Hatigaon, Guwahati, I join my team in wishing her the best.”

Handique, the 100-years-old strong lady was admitted to the hospital 10-days ago after she tested positive for the virus. The doctors and nurses who treated her held a small recovery party at the hospital before she was sent back to Mother’s Old Age home.

Handique was all praise for the doctors and nurses who treated her. She was fondly called Aita (grandmother) by everyone at the hospital.

“We were given fish or meat on most of the days while egg and banana were given daily. We were also given ‘ruti- bhaji’ (chappatis and vegetables) which I enjoyed the most,” the centenarian was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

According to the report, Handique who is undoubtedly in the high-risk group which worried the doctors initially, and she also had hypertension. But she finally defeated the virus.

Assam is one of the worst-affected states in India with the novel virus. Over 149k people have been infected with 511 deaths. 119k people have successfully defeated the virus in Assam, federal health minister data shows.
