Philippines volcano enters a ‘period of unrest’ after 136 quakes in 24-hours


Since Sunday, over 130 earthquakes have been recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), prompting the agency to announce Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental province has entered the ‘period of unrest.’

“DOST-PHIVOLCS would like to remind the public that Kanlaon Volcano is at Alert Level 1, which means that it is at an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest. The local government units and the public are strongly reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must be strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions,” the statement said.

The regional Civil aviation ministry has warned pilots to prevent flying over the volcano’s summit as “ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft. Mount Kanlaon is a stratovolcano on the island of Negros, which stands at an elevation of 8,087 ft above sea-level.

According to, the Phivolcs has recorded 136 volcano-tectonic earthquakes that is tremor caused by the movement of magma (the layer of molten semi-molten state of igneous rocks) on the western flanks in a 24-hour observation duration.

The Philippines is located in the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’ which is an active volcanic zone. The archipelago nation comprised of more than 7k islands. it has at least 24 active volcanoes.
