Shravan Rathod: Bollywood composer dies after Covid diagnosis
Mumbai, India: Tributes poured in on Friday for famous Bollywood music composer Shravan Rathod, who died in a Mumbai hospital after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
Rathod collaborated with fellow composer Nadeem Saifi to produce some of Bollywood's most enduring hits of the 1990s, winning numerous awards for their soundtracks during the decade.
His musician son Sanjeev Rathod told the Press Trust of India that his father was hospitalized after contracting Covid-19 and died late Thursday.
His death comes as India fights a brutal second wave of the pandemic, and on the heels of an especially tragic year for Indian cinema, which has lost many luminaries in the last year.
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, 74, died in September after a long struggle with Covid, while 42-year-old composer Wajid Khan died in June after contracting the virus.
Last April, the industry also lost leading actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor to other illnesses, while Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide in June shocked the world.
Award-winner The "Slumdog Millionaire" composer A.R. Rahman led the tributes to Rathod, tweeting, "Our Music community and your fans will miss you immensely".
The Nadeem-Shravan duo was responsible for several of Bollywood's biggest romantic chartbusters, including 1991's "Phool Aur Kaante" ("Flowers and Thorns") and "Saajan" ("Beloved"), which helped top stars like Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn cement their positions in the industry.
"Shravan (and Nadeem) walked 30 years alongside me in my career with the evergreen album for Phool Aur Kaante. Very sad, very unfortunate to hear of his demise last night," Devgn tweeted.
"I have lost my younger brother today," a heartbroken Saifi, who had earlier asked fans to pray for Rathod's recovery, wrote on Facebook.
"Very sad to know about the passing of music composer Shravan. Nadeem-Shravan created magic for many films in the 90s and later, including Dhadkan that has remained legendary in my career. Deepest condolences to his family" tweeted Akshay Kumar.
Leading producer Boney Kapoor, who worked with the duo on two films, expressed his disappointment on Twitter "I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of music director Shravan. I have fond memories of working with him ".
