India COVID-19 cases: Record daily infections take India’s total to 2.84 million

-

India COVID-19 cases: federal health ministry data on Thursday reflected a record jump in a daily number of cases taking the nation’s caseload much closer to 3 million.

On Thursday, 69,652 coronavirus infections were added, taking the national total to 2.84 million cases. The single-day caseload benchmark was also accompanied by 977 deaths, taking the total fatality numbers to 53,866.

Coronavirus caseload in India has been growing steadily for the past week, with more than 50k new infections recorded daily on an average.

The heightened graph of the new infections is a reflection of the growing number of testing, the rate of which is the world’s most, dwarfed only by the US. It must be noted, India’s population is far too higher than any other nation, except for China.

A recent survey conducted by Thyrocare – a leading private lab – found 26% of the 250,000 samples tested from across the nation had COVID-19 antibodies, which could mean every one in four Indians have been infected by the virus.

“This is a much higher percentage than we had expected. The presence of antibodies is uniform across all age groups, including children,” Dr. Velumani, who’s the head of Thyrocare told Reuters.

Presently, India’s national total stands third in terms of numbers, with the US and Brazil leading the virus caseload count collectively amassing 11,823,570 COVID-19 cases, as per Johns Hopkins tally.
