COVID-19 killed 3-times more people than influenza and pneumonia combined

The novel coronavirus has been linked with killing three times the number of people this year than that of both flu and pneumonia combined in January to August, Office for National Statistics of the UK said.

The data looked into all the deaths recording into the eight-months period from the three diseases and found in the novel virus contributed to 12.4 percent of all the deaths.

All total, there were 48,168 deaths linked to Covid-19; 13,619 deaths were due to pneumonia, and 394 deaths from influenza, the ONS recorded.

COVID-19 deaths were linked to three times the number of deaths from the two other diseases and deaths that had both influenza and pneumonia as the cause, COVID-19 was the underlying cause of the 96% deaths recorded in the time-frame, the shocking data revealed.

There were 48,168 death occurrences due to #COVID19 between January and August 2020, compared with

“The mortality rate for Covid-19 is also significantly higher than influenza and pneumonia rates for both 2020 and the five-year average,” head of mortality analysis at the ONS, Sarah Caul said.

She said, ever since the ONS started recording deaths from flu and pneumonia in 1959, the mortality rate in the first eight months of a year has been the highest so far in 2020, and the cause of death is COVID-19.

The report found, till August 31st of this year, influenza or pneumonia was listed in the death certificates of more people than COVID-19.

But deaths due to COVID-19 were higher than influenza or pneumonia in the March to June time-frame, the ONS noted.

Dr. Nick Scriven, immediate past president of the Society for Acute Medicine, who commented on the results, said: “If there is one message to send out it must be that President Trump was 100% incorrect in his statements this week around flu and Covid and we must not let his words influence anything here.”
