California shooting left many dead, suspect killed: police

San Francesco, United States: According to police, multiple people were killed in a shooting at a rail yard in California’s Bay Area on Wednesday, the latest instance of deadly gun violence in the US.

“I can’t confirm the exact number of injuries and fatalities. But I will tell you that there are multiple injuries and multiple fatalities in this case,” Russell Davis, a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputy, told journalists, adding that the gunman was dead.

After multiple 911 calls reported gunshots, police rushed to an “active shooter investigation” at a public transit maintenance yard in San Jose, a Silicon Valley tech hub of almost a million people.

Although it was not immediately clear whether the shooter was a facility employee, police said some of the victims were.

‘Epidemic’ gun violence in the United States

According to a Fox News affiliate, the shooting occurred at a union meeting and was first reported before 7:00 a.m. local time (1400 GMT), citing the mother of an employee who escaped unharmed.

The manner in which the shooter was killed, as well as the weapon used, were not immediately disclosed by police. The streets near the rail yard were lined with dozens of patrol cars and fire engines.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said that several people were receiving medical treatment.

“Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting,” he tweeted.

The incident occurred in a building that serves as a control center for the Valley Transportation Authority, as well as a train storage and maintenance yard.

The VTA announced on Twitter that all of its employees had been evacuated and that public transportation would be unaffected.

The United States has a long and painful history of deadly gun violence, which has taken the form of a steady daily toll of shootings as well as high-profile mass killings in schools, workplaces, and shopping malls.

Over the last year, the number of homicides in the United States has increased dramatically, primarily due to gun violence.

A FedEx facility in Indianapolis, an office building in California, a grocery store in Colorado, and several spas in Atlanta have all experienced mass shootings in recent months.

Another mass shooting in the Bay Area occurred in August 2019, when two children and a 25-year-old man were killed at a garlic festival in Gilroy, about 30 miles (nearly 50 kilometers) south of San Jose.

Last month, Vice President Joe Biden called gun violence in the United States an “epidemic” and an “international embarrassment.”

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the United States last year, including suicides.
