BJP leader Kapil Mishra sends legal notice to Amazon Prime to remove ‘Tandav’

-

New Delhi (India): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra has sent a legal notice to Amazon Prime Video demanding the immediate removal of web series ‘Tandav’ from its platform, joining a flurry of legal actions taken by the Hindu nationalist party under Narendra Modi over the web series.

“Have issued Legal Notice to Amazon India to immediately remove #Tandav from its platform or face criminal proceedings,” Mishra tweeted.

Expressing similar concerns, BJP leader Manoj Kotak had written to Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.”It seems that the makers of Tandav have mocked Hindu gods and disrespected Hindu religious sentiments. I urge the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban Tandav for the meantime,” Kotak wrote.

He alleged that the series has hurt the sentiments of Hindus and he would not tolerate this.

In another development of the ‘Tandav’ controversy, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry summoned Amazon Prime Video officials in India in connection with the controversy around the web series ‘Tandav’, sources said on Sunday.

An FIR was registered at Lucknow’s Hazratganj Kotwali against Amazon Prime’s India head of original content Aparna Purohit, director of the web series ‘Tandav’ Ali Abbas Zafar, its producer Himanshu Krishna Mehra, writer Gaurav Solanki, and others for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Shortly following the Lucknow prosecution came a similar action from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath — a staunch Hindu nationalist.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s media adviser Shalabh Mani Tripathi, sharing a copy of the FIR lodged against Amazon Prime India in Lucknow wrote:

“There is no tolerance for playing with people’s sentiments in Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh. A serious case has been registered against the entire team of Tandav, which is spreading hate in the guise of cheap web series. Prepare for arrest,” he wrote in Hindi.

Another BJP leader, Ram Kadam on Sunday said that he has filed a complaint at Mumbai’s Ghatkopar Police Station against ‘Tandav’. He alleged that the series has hurt the sentiments of Hindus and he would not tolerate this.

Starring Saif Ali Khan, ‘Tandav’ — an Amazon Prime India original, found itself in the hot waters under the BJP-government of India that has alleged the web-series of defiling religion and hurting the sentiments will ill portrayal of Hindu deities.
