Afghanistan flash flood kills at least 70 killed and thousands displaced

A flash flood hit the northern region of Afghanistan’s Parwan province Wednesday at around 3:00 am local time, upending at least 70 lives and damaging several homes and shelters.

According to a provincial spokesperson, the death toll is expected to rise and many of the fatality cases are women and children.

Summers are prone to flooding in Afghanistan, and this heavy loss of life and property comes are 16 people mostly children were killed in a flash flood in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The flash flood – one that comes in very short notice – stuck large parts of Charikar city in the wee hours of Wednesday when most of the residents were asleep.

Province official Wahida Shahkar told Al Jazeera, “death toll might rise and people are still stuck under the rubble as rescue operations are ongoing.”

Shankar said the magnitude of the diseaster is beyond the level of local government’s capacity to aid, and has urged for central help.

One resident, speaking to the news agency said, most of the people are still under the rubble and yet to surface. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has ordered emergency assistance, the president’s palace said in a statement according to the BBC.

Head of Parwan’s public health department Safiullah Warasta said over 100 have been transferred to hospitals for treatment in Kabul – Afghanistan’s biggest city and capital, from whom several are critical, local media reported.
