Los Angeles, United States: After a year of upheaval in the British royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana on Sunday in California.
“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales,” said a statement from the couple.
The couple’s second child, who would be ninth in line to the British throne, was born in Santa Barbara on Friday and was released from the hospital.
“She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home,” the statement said.
Following their choice to leave frontline royal duties early last year, the pair, formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, currently lives near Los Angeles.
In March, the couple went for a shocking interview with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey, causing the royal family’s largest crisis since Harry’s mother died in a car accident in 1997.
During the two-hour sit-down, which was watched by over 17 million people in the United States and over 11 million in the United Kingdom, Harry and Meghan stated racism played a role in their decision to leave the UK for North America.
A senior royal, according to the parents, speculated on how black their child’s complexion might be before he was born. Meghan has a black mother and a white father.
Meghan, a former actress, also admitted to Winfrey that she was “naively” unprepared for life as a royal and had considered suicide while pregnant with Archie.
Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, have accused newspapers of racial stereotyping, citing coverage of Harry’s white sister-in-law Kate as an example.
Prince Harry is known to get along well with his parents and grandparents.
He told talk show presenter James Corden earlier this year that since coming to the United States, he had spoken with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip via video call so they could see their great-grandson, Archie.
According to British media, Harry has spoken to his father several times since the Oprah interview, including after Prince Philip’s funeral.
Harry emphasized in a new documentary series published last month that his family turned a blind eye to his wife’s troubles, saying he will “never be intimidated into quiet.”
