Amsterdam devises floral method to drive away cyclists parking in the city’s famed canals

-

The city of Amsterdam, which has more cycles than people has been battling with overparked bikes in the city’s famed canals, forcing people to take lanes instead. But, until now.

The Dutch capital will now be setting beautiful bouquets of flowers and plans on the side rails of its business canals so that people are forced to find other places to park their two-wheeled eco-friendly friends.

The move comes after the municipality reportedly complained of overparking in some of the city’s most beautiful bridges that the city boasts of. They argue that parked cycles pollute the beauty of the canals.

“Due to the large number of bicycles parked at the bridge railings, pedestrians no longer fit on the narrow sidewalks and walk on the roadway”, a spokesman said to The Guardian. “This creates unsafe situations.”

Amsterdam, which boasts to be one of the world’s most cycle-friendly cities, has more cycles than people with 767km (478 miles) of cycle lanes. And the eco-friendly trend has been exacerbated by the uncertainty on public transport, thanks to the pandemic.

Polls found people in the city are preferring bicycles than availing of public transports and will continue to do so unless it is announced safe to travel publicly.

The spurt in preference for bicycles has also prompted the city authorities to mull the safety of the bicycle lanes.

Different two-wheelers like sports bikes, e-scooters, e-bikes, and carbo bikes riding side-by-side on the same lane have raised conversations on the safety of the bike lanes.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 continues to remain a matter of concern in the Netherlands. Over 8k people tested positive in the nation, for the straight fourth day, data from Dutch public health agency RIVM showed.

As Europe braces for the second wave of COVID-19, Dutch healthcare authorities are preparing for an increased number of hospitalization in the coming days, NL Times reported.
