India’s home minister Amit Shah, 55, tested positive for the novel coronavirus after getting ‘initial symptoms’ and has been hospitalized on Sunday, the minister himself tweeted on Sunday.
Mr Shah, a close confidant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi became India’s senior-most politician to catch the virus that has affected nearly 2 million people in India.
“On getting the initial symptoms of corona, I got the test done and the report came back positive,” the Home minister tweeted in Hindi.
“My health is fine, but I am being admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors. I request that all of you who have come in contact with me in the last few days, please isolate yourself and get your inquiry done.”
Coronavirus in India is being said to be the fastest growing epidemic in the world, with infection cases racing at a faster rate than other nations.
As per Johns Hopkins data, India’s coronavirus tally stands at 1,750,723, with 37,364 fatalities. Only the US and Brazil is ahead of India in terms of a number of infections.
Earlier last month, India’s high-profile star Amitabh Bachchan tested positive for coronavirus, along with his son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. All of them successfully battled the virus and have been discharged, with Amitabh Bachchan being the latest from the family to return home.
