India’s coronavirus caseload touch nearly 5 million after the lowest jump in weeks on Tuesday, federal health ministry data showed.

On Tuesday, India recorded 83,809 new coronavirus infections, the lowest in weeks after over 90k cases daily on a rough average.

India’s caseload is by far the highest in the world, second after the US, which has the most number of cases. India is apparently just short of some 70k new cases to surpass the 5 million mark.

In the last 24-hours, India’s death toll increased by 1,054 cases leading to surpass the 80k threshold.

A state-wise tally by the health ministry shows Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state of any other, followed by Punjab, Odisha, Chattisgarh among others.

Experts blame the rising number of cases in India to the nation’s gradual re-opening of the economy, presently under the eponymous ‘Unlock 4.0’ where subway trains have been thrown open around the nation.
