India coronavirus: 52,972 new infections in 24-hours, 2 million-milestone nearing

On Sunday, India coronavirus counts increased by another 52,972 fresh cases, taking the national total to 1.8 million, the third-most in the world.

Currently, there are 579357 active cases and 1186203 discharged. The Narendra Modi-led government has boasted India’s recovery rate which stands at 65.77%, according to Federal Health Ministry data. More than 38k has died, 771 in the last 24-hours.

The recent uptick in the new infections has been reported from Rajasthan, Orissa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands with 81 cases; Andhra Pradesh with 2216 cases and Bihar with 1369 new infections in the last 24-hours.

Health experts have warned that the world’s second-most populous nation is yet to encounter the peak number of cases as daily count continues to spike.

On Monday, India touched a testing milestone of 2 crores with 2,02,02,858 tests conducted till August 2, ANI reports. 3,81,027 tests were conducted on Sunday alone, says Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Maharashtra continues to lead the national caseload followed by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

States of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal recorded the most number of new cases. The federal government in recent weeks have ramped up testing, which is reflected in the country’s growing number of positive cases.
