India sets global record after 78,761 new COVID-19 cases were reported in a single day, federal health ministry data shows, the highest number of cases ever recorded in a single day, anywhere in the world since the pandemic began.
This comes within a day after India recorded 77k+ cases, but was just short of the highest record for the most number of cases in a single day held by the US.
On July 16th the US recorded 77,299 cases of the virus, becoming the only nation in the world to report so many cases in a single day, until India’s Sunday record.
India is the third-most affected country in the world with the novel coronavirus that originated in Wuhan last year in December. Only Brazil and the US have more reported cases than India, so far.
On Friday, India touched the 40 million mark of coronavirus testing doing more than 9 lakh tests on Friday alone, according to media reports.
“…9 lakh Covid-19 samples each day for the second consecutive day, keeping a sharp focus on test, track, and treat strategy of the Union government. India has already created a capacity of doing 10 lakh tests per day…,” Union health ministry said in a statement.
