White peacock dances to impress peahen; people say they’re impressed

A video of a white peacock dancing to impress mate has gone viral. The footage was originally shared by the official Twitter handle of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam which was retweeted by IFS officer Parveen Kaswan.

Regular peacocks are often seen spreading their feathers in a canopy and dancing to attract mates in zoos, bird sanctuaries, and parks. But encountering a white peacock doing the same is not so common, given the bird itself is rare.

The video shows a breathtaking view of the pristine bird spanning its tail feathers in a fan while lightly fluttering it to impress a female. Since shared by the IFS officer the video has garnered some 7k views and over 700 likes.

The tapping of the feet, the occasional jitters of the feather-fan is unmissable as the white male tried to impress his ladylove. And the peahen could not but notice the romantic show put on by her suitor.

Twitterati were all-bonkers by the romantic male. One user went on to comment “don’t know about the peahen, but I am impressed.” While another user apparently suggested the peahen, citing Darwin’s ‘survival of the fittest’ theory, to not choose a male with a genetic defect as her sperm donor for her offsprings.

White Peacocks

Peacock is the term reserved for a male “peafowl” while peahen is for the female. Usually, peacocks are multi-colored birds with bright indigo-green hues in the uniquely-shaped extravagant train of feathers. They say, no bird has the right like a peacock to display vanity.

But when it comes to white peacock, they’re beautiful to look at, almost the same as the colorful counterpart, just cloud white in hue. It must be noted that the Indian and Ceylon-native (now Sri Lanka) white peacocks are not albino, as opposed to the often perception. They’re born with blue eyes and colored skin but have white feathers because of genetic variation. Albino variation, on the other hand, is fully white, with pale skin and pink and white eyes.

It remains unclear as to when the bird first originated, but it is said that they were largely unseen until the British colonies were set in India. The first white peacock was spotted in 1830 and is speculated they naturally bred in India.

Either it’s albino or genetically mutated, Both cases it’s not good choice for a female to choose a defective sperm donor for its future offsprings. According to Darwin’s theory, survival of the fittest.
