In a heart-breaking incident, an elegant swan lost her life in Manchester and the reason is human cruelty. The incident happened when a swan’s nest was vandalized by a group of young boys on May 20, damaging most of the eggs laid there.
Experts believe the swan died of ‘broken heart’ following the destruction of her precious eggs, which was done, as witnesses have seen, by aiming stones and bricks on the nest, Manchester Evening News reported.

After the swan lost three out of six eggs, two more eggs were reportedly displaced by other means. There were ducks and dogs and hens that would come to the nest and threaten the poor swan.
The nest and the swan were under the vigilance of wildlife activists in the vicinity. They believe that two out of the remaining three eggs were lost to predatory creatures.
Even more heartbreaking was the fact that her mate of life, went away from the nest driven by stress as experts claim. The dual shock of losing her family was too tortuous to bear. In a Facebook post, activist Michael Mason wrote:
“I really don’t want to do this post today because it comes with great sadness.
“I have tried to keep you updated on this swan who laid six eggs, three were destroyed by youths, she has then been harassed by dogs jumping in and harassed by a duck and moorhen and two more eggs were lost leaving her with one egg.
“Her mate left her on her own and sadly I was informed this morning she was found slumped in her nest dead. I just feel like crying,” he wrote.

The Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981 protects swan, their nests and offspring. The officials from RSPCA has urged anyone on with information on the incident to call in the helpline 0300 123 8018.
Apparently, pelting stones at animals and birds have been thought of as a fun activity by many. The death of the poor swan was yet again a reminder to the world of the outcome of uninhibited fun or even cruelty.
“Thousands of people are absolutely outraged by this, and rightfully so, yet is it not strange that as a society we are angered by an event like this, but not by the fact that 30 – 40 million day-old male chicks are gassed or macerated alive every year in the UK alone?” Earthling Ed noted on a Facebook post.

“Why are we not outraged by the fact that mother cows have their babies taken away, causing them emotional grief and pain? Why are we so selective with our compassion? Why is killing babies, hurting mothers and destroying families not acceptable in this scenario, but completely fine when it happens to the tens of billions of animals who are killed for our taste buds?” the animal rights and environment activist stated.
We have failed to nature, time, and again. Hopefully, we make efforts to educate ourselves, as well as children that animals too have feelings and that they’re significantly if not equally sensitive to their members.
