On Sunday India became the world’s third worst-hit country with the novel coronavirus after it surpassed Russia. Only Brazil and the US are ahead of India in terms of the number of infections.
According to COVID-19.Org, India’s coronavirus count is just short of 700k with 698.134k confirmed cases and nearly 20k deceased. While Russia’s count is at 680,283 according to stat tracked by Johns Hopkins University.
It took only 10-days to cross the somber milestone. On Sunday a whopping 25k infections were confirmed in the country. On June 26th India became the world’s fourth worst-hit.
The majority of India’s cases are from Maharashtra (2,06,619), Tamil Nadu (1,11,151), and New Delhi (99,444) followed by Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka, West Bengal and so on.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare emphasized India’s 21 states and UTs has a higher recovery rate than the national average of 60.77 percent, according to reports.
Reuters notes that the number of cases in India is eight-times that of China which was the epicenter of the virus and has a similar population like India’s.
With the rising numbers, the country which has by now significantly relaxed lockdown in many parts is again starting to recollapse to contain the spread.
West Bengal recently announced it will bar the entry of flights from many affected cities in Kolkata International Airport. Social distancing guidelines have been extended in Kerela until July 31st.
