In a very unusual incident, a baby in Vietnam was born with his mother’s failed intrauterine device (IUD) grabbing in his tiny hand. His doctors decided to click the picture of the bizarre scene and it has gone legit viral.
The baby was born in Vietnam’s Hai Phong International Hospital on Tuesday, July 30. The picture was uploaded on the social media handle of the hospital which shows an image of the newborn grasping a black and yellow intrauterine coil, eyes shut, and crying.
According to local media reports, the baby was born with the device in hand, and the doctor assisting the birth found the whole instance interesting, hence he decided to take the picture.
“After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention:” Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong told local media.
The doctor told, the mother’s intrauterine device probably got dislodged leading to the failed performance. Such devices prevent the sperm cells from fertilizing the egg cells using hormones or copper. But in this case, it clearly failed. Intrauterine devices are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, but in rare cases, it can fail.
The hospital Facebook handle shared the images, and jokingly captined: “The baby is very brave, breaking his family planning method to join the ‘misery’ with humanity.”
According to local media reports, the mother, who is a patient of schizophrenia has two children. In 2018 she went to a district hospital to get the IUD implanted. She later discovered her precaution did not work and she was pregnant.
The baby was born healthy, weighting 3.2 kgs (7 lbs), and both the mum and tot are under observation in the hospital. The family of the baby decided to keep the child after seeing the sympathy he eceived from the doctors and the world.
