Bollywood actor Asif Basra was found dead at his home in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, local police said. Basra, 55 was found hanging at his private home in Dharmashala.
The forensic team is investigating the death to confirm if it was suicide or has other angles to it, ANI news agency reported. He had the complex on-lease at the tourist-heavy destination and used to visit the place regularly.
The death came as a shock to the film fraternity, who reacted with shellshock.
Mr. Basra was recently seen supporting Sushant Singh Rajput in ‘Kai Po Che’ and is known for his roles in movies like ‘Jab We Met.’ In over two decades of career, Basra played pivotal roles in a number of hit Bollywood movies.
The actor’s death follows the highly controversial suicide case of Sushant Singh Rajput, whose sudden demise shocked the Mumbai film fraternity and a drug angle on the case garnered international media attention.
Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai apartment, and several allegations emerged over the cause of death in absence of any suicide note left behind by the actor.
No suicide notes have been reported by Mr. Basra either.
Kareena Kapoor with whom Basra worked in the box-office hit ‘Jab We Met’ wrote: “Rest in peace, Asif Basra. Heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones.” Basra played the role of a suspicious shopkeeper.
Anushka Sharma, who produced ‘Paatal Lok’ extended her condolences to the actor’s family. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui said, “It is unbelievable, yet another loss of a dear friend Asif Basra(…).”
Director Hansal Mehta tweeted, “Asif Basra! Can’t be true… This is just very, very sad,” quoting which actor Manoj Bajpayee wrote: “What? This is too shocking!! Shot with him just before Lockdown!!! Oh My God!!!”
